If you are a novice or experience hiker - Hanging Rock State Park - in North Carolina -is for you. If you love waterfalls - Hanging Rock State Park has 5 waterfalls to choose from. Hanging Rock State Park is a great place to take your class, Scout troop or family to enjoy a day with nature. Everyone will enjoy a day at Hanging Rock State Park.

Location of Hanging Rock State Park
Hanging Rock State Park is not far from some large cities in North Carolina (Winston-Salem 33 miles, Greensboro - 40 miles, Raleigh 120 miles, and Charlotte - 120 miles) but when you get there you feel like you are in another world.

Hiking at Hanging Rock State Park

I am not much of a hiker. I like to take walks in the woods, but I don't do it on a regular basis. I went to Hanging Rock with my daughter on a field trip for her school. I had a lot of fun! The hikes we went on were easy!

Hanging Rock has trails for the novice hiker and even something for those that want a challenge. There are 12 different trails to choose from with difficulty levels ranging rom easy to strenuous. The trails range in distance from 0.2 mile to 7.4 miles (one-day). All trails are clearly marked and visitors are encouraged to stay on the trails. Wild animals (bears and snakes) consider this park their home but they do stay away from the trails (most of the time!). This may not be an appropriate park for young children that like to sprint away from Mom & Dad - you are never sure what is around the corner.

Waterfalls at Hanging Rock State Park

Just one word describes the 5 waterfalls at Hanging Rock - beautiful! It is a sheer pleasure to just be there and experience the rushing water. I wish there were benches by the falls, but there are rocks that you can rest on while you enjoy the falls.

Picnic at Hanging Rock State Park

Be sure to pack a picnic to enjoy while you are at Hanging Rock. There are 3 picnic shelters to use while you are at the park. The shelters can be reserved if you have a large group at the park.

Camping at Hanging Rock State Park

There are over 70 campsites available at Hanging Rock. There are also 10 cabins available to rent. What a great vacation! Hanging out at a state park for a week! The campsites include a tent pad, picnic table and grill at each site. Water, restroom and shower facilities are available nearby. The 2009 fee for a campsite was $18 per day.

The cabins accommodate up to 6 people with two bedrooms and one bathroom. The cabin also comes with a kitchen (with dining space) and living room. During the 2009 season the cabins rented for $83 per day with a minimum 2 day stay. June through Labor Day requires a week-long stay.

Other Activities at Hanging Rock State Park

There is more to Hanging Rock than hiking and waterfalls. There is a 12 acre lake that you can fish, swim or boat in. Since Hanging Rock State Park is located in the mountains with lots of rocks, rock climbing is permitted in the park. Check with the park for rules and regulations. There are also events held at the park throughout the year - including Ranger-led hikes.
